Pistol Pete Predicted His Own Death Back In 1974

By Dionysis Aravantinos

Back in 1974, Pete Maravich in an interview with the Beaver County Times, said: “I don’t want to play 10 years in the NBA and die of a heart attack at age 40.” Well, in Maravich’s 10th season, he died of a heart attack in a pick-up basketball game. The heart conditions he had apparently, were unknown, which makes this story even freakier.

“That’s a little scary,” reporter Andy Nuzzo said, who had interviewed Maravich when he played for the Atlanta Hawks. “The story was laying on my desk when I got to work (Wednesday). I read it, and read it and read it and read it. I couldn’t believe it. Everything matched.”
Maravich had only been playing basketball for four years and he was saying he didn’t need basketball, that he could do something else. Maravich collapsed and died while playing a pickup game in Pasadena. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office reported that Maravich died from an undetermined kind of heart disease.
